Children usually experience the same types of sports and musculoskeletal injuries as we adults face, but theirs is more vulnerable and at risk because their skeletal and muscle systems are still growing, and their bones are not as strong as adults' bones.
When we have active children...as parents, it can be hard, but it may be difficult to avoid sports and musculoskeletal injuries.
These injuries can be:
These injuries can happen for a variety of reasons, from
Joint Sprains such as wrist sprains or ankle sprains
A sprain is an injury to the ligament that is usually overstretched out of the ordinary, resulting in small micro-tear or worse tears. Ligaments are tough fibrous connective tissues that can connect two or more bones together, and keeps a joint stable.
The most common type of sprain is the ankle sprain, which usually occur during sports but can even be sustained by walking over uneven or normal terrain, and they are commonly treated by our senior musculoskeletal and sports physiotherapists.
Muscle
and Tendon Strains such as calf muscle injuries
A strain is very similar to a sprain, but's moreso of the muscles and tendons.
Our muscles are specialized tissues that are able to contract (shorten) and extend (lengthen) to allow/create movement. Tendons are very very tough fibrous cords that connects muscles to bones.
Growth Plate Injuries
In some cases, children may unfortunately damage or injure their growth plates, which are usually found at the ends of their long bones.
These growth plates, like their name implies, helps to lengthen and grow the bones, and if they're injured, may cause imbalanced growth of the bones.
Phoenix Rehab are very particular on who they onboard for their senior musculoskeletal and sports physiotherapists. They need to be trained and experienced in assessing, diagnosing and management of sports and musculoskeletal injuries.
Our assessments and treatments are based on evidence-based-practice and researched to ensure that clinical outcomes are good to great.
